Planning a trip to Las Vegas and wondering where you can legally smoke marijuana? You’re not alone. With millions of visitors arriving in Sin City every year, cannabis questions are among the most searched travel topics for the destination. While recreational weed has been legal in Nevada since 2017, the rules about where you can actually consume it have changed significantly—especially with the arrival of licensed cannabis consumption lounges in 2024 and 2025.
This updated guide covers everything you need to know about smoking marijuana in Las Vegas, including current possession limits, where consumption is legal, and how to avoid fines or trouble with the law.
The Green Blazer is local to Las Vegas so our team definitely knows the ins and outs of smoking in the valley.
Is Recreational Cannabis Legal in Las Vegas?
Yes. Recreational weed has been legal in Nevada for adults aged 21 years and older since January 1, 2017, after voters approved legalization in 2016. You can purchase marijuana from any state-licensed dispensary throughout Las Vegas.
To buy cannabis, you’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID proving you’re 21 or older. Tourists can purchase without a medical card, just like locals. If you’re visiting from another country, bring your passport, as some dispensaries may not accept foreign IDs.
How Much Weed Can You Carry in Las Vegas? (Updated Possession Limits)
Nevada’s possession limits changed significantly in 2024 thanks to Senate Bill 277. As of January 1, 2024, adults 21 and older can now legally possess:
• Up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower (previously 1 ounce)
• Up to ¼ ounce (0.25 oz) of cannabis concentrate (previously ⅛ ounce)
These increased limits apply to both residents and tourists. Carrying more than the legal amount can result in serious criminal charges, including a category E felony for amounts above 2.5 ounces but under 14 grams of concentrate.
Where Can You Legally Smoke Marijuana in Las Vegas?
This is the most important thing for visitors to understand: just because weed is legal to buy does not mean you can smoke it anywhere. Public consumption of marijuana is prohibited under Nevada law, and violating this rule is a misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $600.
1. Private Residences
The most straightforward legal option is consuming cannabis inside a private residence. This includes rental homes, apartments (if the landlord permits it), and cannabis-friendly Airbnbs. If you’re visiting Las Vegas, booking a 420-friendly vacation rental is one of the easiest ways to enjoy cannabis legally and comfortably.
2. Cannabis Consumption Lounges (New for 2024–2025)
This is the biggest change since the original version of this guide was published. Nevada passed Assembly Bill 341 in 2021, authorizing licensed cannabis consumption lounges.
As of early 2026, the main options for visitors include:
• Dazed! Consumption Lounge — Located inside Planet 13 on Desert Inn Road. This is currently the only operating state-licensed consumption lounge and sees around 250 customers daily, with the majority being tourists.
• Sky High Lounge — Operated by the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe on sovereign land above the NuWu Cannabis Marketplace, just two blocks from Fremont Street. It features dab bars, rooftop views, and VIP packages. Because it’s on tribal land, it operates under tribal regulation rather than state licensing.
At these lounges, you can smoke pre-rolls, use vaporizers, and enjoy THC-infused non-alcoholic mocktails. Important rules to keep in mind:
• You cannot bring your own cannabis products — you must purchase what you consume on-site
• Alcohol is not permitted on the premises
• You must be 21 or older with valid ID
• Session limits apply (Nevada caps on-site consumption at 50mg of THC per session)
• Purchases at lounges are taxed at 10%, similar to dispensary pricing
More than 20 additional lounges have received conditional approval from the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board, so expect more options to open in the coming months and years.
3. Cannabis-Friendly Hotels
Most Las Vegas hotels and resorts strictly prohibit marijuana use anywhere on their property—including inside guest rooms, on balconies, and in all common areas. Getting caught can result in cleaning fees of $250 or more and possible eviction from the property.
However, some smaller, independent hotels, particularly downtown and off-Strip properties, may have more lenient policies. Always call ahead and confirm the hotel’s cannabis policy before booking if this matters to you. Even at “cannabis-friendly” hotels, you still risk citation from police if smoking becomes a complaint.
Where You Absolutely Cannot Smoke Marijuana
To stay out of trouble, avoid consuming cannabis in any of these places:
• The Las Vegas Strip and public sidewalks — Public consumption is illegal and enforced
• Casinos and gaming floors — Cannabis is prohibited in all gaming establishments due to federal regulations, even though tobacco smoking is allowed on most casino floors
• Hotel rooms and resort pools — Nearly all major hotels ban marijuana, regardless of their tobacco policies
• Restaurants and bars (including outdoor patios) — Cannabis consumption is prohibited in all dining and drinking establishments
• Parks, playgrounds, and public recreation areas
• Concerts, festivals, and sporting events
• Moving vehicles — Consuming cannabis in a car is illegal even as a passenger
• Federal land — This includes national parks and any federal buildings. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law
Quick Tips for Smoking in Las Vegas
• Always buy from a licensed dispensary and keep your receipt and original packaging
• Plan your consumption spot ahead of time — don’t assume you can figure it out on the Strip
• Start low and go slow with edibles — they can take up to two hours to take effect, and many tourists get in trouble by taking more too soon
• Never transport marijuana across state lines, even to another legal state — this is a federal offense
• Store cannabis securely in a vehicle, preferably in the trunk or a locked container
• Don’t carry more than the legal limit of 2.5 ounces of flower or ¼ ounce of concentrate
Remember: Marijuana Is Still Federally Illegal
While Nevada state law permits recreational cannabis, marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. This means you cannot bring cannabis onto federal land (including national parks), through airports, or across state lines. Casinos also cite federal law as a key reason for prohibiting marijuana on their properties, since they operate under federal gaming regulations.
